Nearly 19 million South African commuters rely on minibus taxi’s as their mode of transport. The industry has seen exponential growth in the last decade and as of last year, the industry is estimated to generate over R40 billion a year.

Bonisile Makubalo, director of SA Taxi Corporate Affairs, said that taxi’s also make up 68.8% of land based transport which amounts to more than rail and busses put together.

Ride hailing service Uber has also expanded considerably throughout Africa.
