At least 20 people have been arrested in the Gugulethu informal settlement during what is believed to be a service delivery protest.
Gugulethu residents took to the street in the early hours of Monday morning (5 May) in what has been a violent protest. The crowd barricaded one of the area’s main roads with rocks and rubble.According to Eyewitness News, police have had to use teargas and rubber bullets to control the crowd of protesting residents. When reporters attempted to address the protestors, they were pelted with stones.
Although the reason for the protest is unclear, it is believed to be about service delivery and more police have been deployed to the area, Eyewitness News reported.
