Quieter roads for South Africa? | Infrastructure news

Quieter roads, cleaner air and lower taxes on individuals will be some of the benefits passed on from Transnet’s R300-billion infrastructure plan, MPs heard on Tuesday.

Acting chief financial officer Anoj Singh told the portfolio committee on public enterprises that its expansion and improvement of rail services would have a range of positive effects for South Africans.

“Trucks won’t be moving so many products on roads anymore. There will be less emissions. There will also be less tax on individuals. Treasury won’t have to maintain the roads and won’t have to make allocations.”

He said Transnet was training 2000 more people than it needed.

“We are training beyond our requirements. We don’t need the 2000 people. We are training for the economy.”
