A plan to convert two of Uganda’s aerodromes into airports is expected to help ease traffic at Uganda’s one and only major airport, Entebbe international airport. Uganda’s Entebbe international airport is the county’s only major airport and has seen passenger numbers increase more than two fold over the past 3 years.
Uganda’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has estimated the cost to convert the two aerodromes into proper airports at US$240 million (R1.98 billion). The CAA’s public relations manager, Ignie Igunduura, says: “The master plan studies’ report has already been submitted to the government but the aerodromes will be developed in phases because it wouldn’t be easy to do both of them in one go.”
Because Uganda is a landlocked country, air transport is extremely vital for the country as it’s the quickest and easiest way for people to travel in and out of the country and also for the transportation of goods. The import and export of goods can be increased with two new airports, which will have a positive economic effect.
