Limpopo mine goes solar | Infrastructure news

A Limpopo chrome mine will be the first mine in the country to have an off-grid utility scale photovoltaic system. When it is complete the 1 MW plant will produce an estimated 1.8 GWs of electricity per year.

JinkoSolar will supply the necessary 4 179 polycrystalline photovoltaic panels. This will reduce the mine’s daytime diesel generator use. This project is in line with the government’s plan to diversify the energy industry and to increase power supply from independent producers.

“Experts are of the opinion that the demand for South African coal, platinum, palladium and chromium will increase and mines will eventually also face the power crunch seen in the country. Turnkey photovoltaic plants will benefit all by decreasing ever increasing energy demands. The off-grid photovoltaic solar system is expected to be completed by late October.
