Transport month to be launched in Soweto | Infrastructure news

The Minister of Transport, Ben Martins will on Monday, 1 October 2012 launch national Transport Month in Emndeni, Soweto.

Minister Martins is expected to focus on the government’s achievements in delivering safe and reliable transport systems in the country in his keynote address.

The Executive Mayor Parks Tau will touch on the various initiatives that have been taken by the city to facilitate ease of movement by commuters and motorists.
One of the highlights of the month will be a transport conference to be co-hosted by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and African Association of Public Transport at the Nasrec Expo Centre from 7-12 October 2012. One of the issues to be discussed at the conference is the bus rapid transit system in Africa.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport Rehana Moosajee will host 70 children from across the city who will show adults how much they care about road safety. Parents are sure to learn a thing or two about road safety from their children. The city’s new model commuter shelters will be launched in Lenasia and other areas in seven regions on October 16.
On 17 October, MMC Moosajee will be part of an interesting adventure at the Johannesburg Park Station that will see several teams of Johannesburg residents trying to show others how much they know about their city.
Teams of four people each will be challenged to negotiate their way through the city and visit interesting places using public transport such as trains, buses and taxis.
The first team of four to reach their destination will be aptly rewarded for their intimate knowledge of the city’s public transport system.
