Trash-Collector™ has not allowed any grass to grow under its feet and has targeted schools in the Western Cape with donations of the bags to school children. Around 1 000 bags were handed to the Pinelands North Primary School just in time for the September holidays. The organisation says that it was no surprise that the school accepted this as it is a leader in ecologically responsible schooling in the Western Cape. Each child and teacher received value packs and were tasked to collect as much trash while on holiday during their travels in their motor vehicles. With each Trash-Collector™ holding just under one kilogramme of trash, it attaches niftily behind the front headrest or in the cubbyhole. With over 400 children and teachers at the school, a tonne of litter will be collected just using Trash-Collector™. The school averages four tonnes of refuse on a monthly basis in their active recycling programme which is to be lauded. The minimisation of waste and that, waste to landfill, is a sharp focus in the country at the moment and the sooner children are involved, the sooner it will become second nature to reduce, re-use and recycle.
Trash-Collector™ easily entertains the children while on the road, with vibrant colours and apt themes which they can colour in. In this instance, the Cat and Mouse and Rugby themes were chosen. The sky is the limit with themes and messaging that can be designed and printed on this new accessory, ideal for any mode of transport and occasion. Ann Morton, Principal of Pinelands North Primary School says, “When first presented with a Trash-Collector™, it immediately fitted with the school’s enviro ethos. The school as a whole takes the concerns of our environment very seriously. We walk the walk and talk the talk. So much so, that we have presented thought provoking papers to the Western Cape Parliament in 2011 regarding waste and other environmental topics. The children picketed vehemently outside Parliament earlier this year, raising the plight of our endangered species in commemoration of World Environment Day on 5 June. I am very impressed with Trash-Collector™ and urge all other parents to make this a vital component of everyday living and educate their children on waste management.”Trash-Collector™ is made entirely from paper sourced from trees grown specifically for paper manufacturing and comes with certification by the Forest Stewardship Council, an organisation which promotes responsible management of the world’s forests.
According to Jackie Hunter, founder of Trash-Collector™,“Alfred Mercier was quoted saying ‘What we learn with pleasure we never forget’.I firmly believe this to be true, as Trash-Collector™ is fun and interactive – our youth will be more inclined to take the necessary steps to prevent litter and reduce the carbon footprint in our country. I salute Pinelands North Primary School for their vision and initiatives to create a better country for our youth.” Trash-Collector™ retails for R9 per unit and R45 for the value pack of five. These prices are inclusive of VAT, with free delivery door-to-door nationwide until 31 December 2012. They make for fun, practical and novel Christmas stocking fillers and one can even use them as party packs.
