Climate change is becoming increasingly obvious with erratic weather conditions experienced across the globe. South Africa itself has seen extreme climate conditions with severe drought in Limpopo while the Eastern Cape experienced almost devastating flooding. As such, this is no longer ‘pie in the sky’ and greenwashing by companies, no longer good enough. International efforts to stem the heating of the earth’s atmosphere are slow at best but at least there is a focus on the issues that the globe as a whole faces. South Africa is one of the top ten polluters in the world. The reliance on our abundant coal reserves, coupled with sanctions during the apartheid regime which led to the coal liquefaction, has caused high levels of emissions.

Companies are fully aware that these circumstances should change and now, with the announcement of the introduction of carbon tax in the next financial year, change simply has to be made by industry in the country. It is estimated that the top 40 companies in the country would have to pay billions for a tax of R75 per tonne of carbon. These figures are still in discussion but, the fact remains, carbon tax is coming and climate change is real.

Now, companies have an opportunity to have the effects of the carbon tax, the importance of climate change strategies and solutions to this challenge unpacked at a one-day conference hosted by 3S Media and ReSource magazine at Glenhove Conference Centre in Johannesburg.Jayne Mammatt from PwC will report on the activities of the Global 500 companies in terms of carbon disclosure while Kyle Mandy, tax expert, will unpack the effects of carbon and other environmental taxes companies may come to face in the near future. Promethium, through Robbie Louw and Karolina Euler-van Hulst, will discuss how carbon should be included in the physical, regulatory and economic impacts of projects as well as water risks in relation to climate change.

Envitech will discuss solutions to these challenges including the reduction of carbon emissions and the calculation thereof. It certainly does not matter in which industry you are – if you manufacture, transport, mine or distribute, the impact on your bottom line can be mitigated if you become resilient to climate change.
