Basil Read has reported that the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has awarded the company a road rehabilitation contract worth R279 million.
Basil Read is to rehabilitate national route 5, section 4, which is located between Vaalpensspruit and Winburg in North West.The total length of the road to be rehabilitatedis 33.4km, starting east of Vaalpensspruit and ending west at the N1 highway entry and exit ramps. Basil Read CEO Marius Heynshas stated that the company hoped this was the beginning of good things to come.“We are pleased with this contract that has been awarded to our Roadcrete division. We are looking forward to strong business activity in our roads division this year.”
The project will run for 24monthsand is due to begin a few weeks. The contract includes the horizontal realignment of three sections of the road and the crushing of about 800 000 tons of stone. In addition, six new lanes at a total length of about 19km will be developed and added to different parts of the road.Five important intersections will be upgraded with an exclusive right-turning lane on one of the intersections.The project alsoincludes two new bridges, the Tom Schutte and the Du Plooyspruit, to be built at 8.4km and 41km from Vaalpensspruit, respectively.
