In order to boost economic ties with its neighbours and to create alternative accesses to sea ports, landlocked Ethiopia has signed agreements with Chinese and Indian companies to construct highways that will connect the country with neighbouring Sudan, South Sudan and Kenya.
These road projects, branching out from the Ethiopian regions of Oromia, Gambella and South Ethiopia Peoples’ State, will create 260 km of additional tarred roads at a cost of US$130 million (R1.19 billion).After Eritrea and Ethiopia fought its border war between 1998 and 2000, Ethiopia has been highly dependent on Djibouti for imports and exports, with 98% of its export and import freight coming through Port Djibouti.
