Due to the hard work by the Maputo Port CEO, Osório Lucas, and previous Maputo Corridor Logistics Initiative (MCLI) CEO Brenda Horne-Ferreira, groundbreaking amendments have been made to the transit customs legislation in Mozambique.
Until recently, the Maputo Corridor faced challenges as a result of outdated transit customs legislation placed on trade in transit from the Port of Maputo. MCLI worked closely with the port and the Mozambican government in a World Bank project, which gave detailed input into the changes necessary to facilitate ease of movement of transit through Mozambique. This project was pivotal to providing the groundwork for changes now reflected in the customs legislation. These amendments adopt world-best practice in a risk management approach to transit customs processing and will facilitate the increase in bidirectional cargo flow in the Maputo Corridor. The legislation is primarily aimed at exemption of certain goods from bond and guarantee requirements and drastically reduces these requirements on other cargos.
The Portuguese and English versions of the legislation are available on Gazetted Portuguese Version. The document emanating from the aforementioned World Bank project can also be accessed on the same platform, in both Portuguese and English.
