The Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Cllr James Nxumalo, has sympathised with the residents of Siyathuthuka informal settlement near Sea Cow Lake who lost their homes when a fire ravaged through the informal settlement on Saturday, 13/04/13.
Approximately 588 people were left destitute when their shacks burnt down. As a form of short-term relief, the Municipality has organised two marquees where the victims are being housed, ablution facilities, 600 blankets and food parcels. Several NGOs have also contributed with warm meals. Today, 15/04/13, Cllr Nxumalo and the Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Nigel Gumede visited the area to assess the extent of the damage. The Mayor thanked all parties who had contributed towards offering short-term relief to the affected citizens. He said that the Municipality was currently in talks with the Provincial Department of Housing to determine how they can assist the affected families.As the winter season approaches, people are urged to be aware of fire safety tips and to not leave stoves, heaters and other types of flammable material unattended.
There were no fatalities and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
