Collect-a-can supports Recycling Day | Infrastructure news

Almost a ton of waste was picked up on Friday, 20 September 2013 during the Moroka North community clean-up in Soweto, which formed part of Recycling Day. As part of the annual Clean-up South Africa (SA) Week, Collect-a-Can and CAN DO! (Nampak Bevcan) hosted Recycling Day activities at Nkanyezi Recreational Sports Centre in Moroka North, Soweto.

The City of Johannesburg, Standard Chartered Bank, Emergency Management Services, the Zondi Buy-Back Centre, as well as community members all joined in the initiative as they cleaned-up the streets around the park.

“We are thrilled about the support we received from the community and very grateful to everyone who gave their time and energy to make this event such a success,” said Zimasa Velaphi, Public Relations and Marketing Manager of Collect-a-Can.

“We believe that it is our responsibility to pro-actively minimise the impact of beverage cans and other metal packaging on the environment, says Alex Bouwer, Marketing Manager for Nampak Bevcan. “We are delighted that consumers are recognizing the importance of recycling and hope to see a continued increase in our recovery rates.

Recycling Day is celebrated annually across South Africa to raise awareness with the general public about the importance of cleaning up litter and recycling in South Africa.
