Call for papers

The majestic Lord Charles Hotel, in the Western Cape, South Africa, will play host to the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa’s (IWMSA) much anticipated and highly influential WasteCon 2014 Conference from 6 to 10 October 2014.

The first announcement of the Conference – which is the highlight of the local waste management industry’s calendar – and the Conference’s call for papers has already gone out, with the deadline, 1 February 2014, for the submission of abstracts (which are to be no longer than 1 A4 page in length, approximately 300 words long) rapidly approaching. Oral papers or posters have been invited for presentation at the conference on the topics listed in the Conference’s subthemes below.

The Conference is to have three primary subthemes to highlight developments, research, technologies and innovations within each subtheme, as follows:

  1. Sustainable Waste Industry
  • Growth and development within the waste sector;
  • Waste minimisation;
  • Job creation and employment opportunities;
  • Social upliftment and benefits (Community empowerment);
  • Industry and experience; and
  • Training and awareness raising.
  1. Policy and Planning: Geared for Action
  • Legislation, policy and institutional framework;
  • Extended producer responsibility;
  • Waste information management;
  • Natural capital / optimisation;
  • Waste costs and economics;
  • Monitoring and evaluation;
  • Norms/ standards;
  • Integrated waste management; and
  • Industry intervention (IndWMP).
  1. Technology for Transformation
  • Technologies for pollution management;
  • Waste treatment;
  • Alternative technologies and beneficiation;
  • Waste to energy;
  • Landfill engineering; and
  • Transportation and transfer.
The Conference organisers note specifically that it is important that the submissions include the authors title, authors name, organisation and contact details, with successful contributors being notified by the 4 April 2014, with full instructions for authors being provided at the time of notification. “No late papers will be considered. Should the   accepted, a registration form will need to be submitted to the Conference Secretariat.”

The Conference Secretariat indicates that all papers must be submitted online at www.wastecon.co.za in .doc format. In addition, entrance fee and registration information can also be accessed on the WasteCon website, www. Wastecon.co.za and early bird registrations will be valid until 31 May 2014.
