The re-launch of ‘Operation Phezukwabo’ in KZN is paying dividends for the province as the Province’s Road Traffic Inspectorate suspended 17 trucks at Pietermaritzburg’s Mkhondeni weighbridge for various defaults.

As part of intensifying law enforcement in the lead up to the festive season RTI officers carried inspected numerous trucks at the weighbridge resulting in 24 vehicles being tested, 17 being suspended and  fines totalling R21 000 being issued for various violations.

Willies Mchunu, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison re-launched ‘Operation Phezukwabo’ at the end of October to highlight an intensified focus on heavy commercial vehicles.

Mchunu says, “We are sending out a stern message to all road users that un-roadworthy vehicles will be removed from our roads.”

“The fact that a one-day random operation can lead to the suspension of 17 trucks demonstrates the seriousness of the challenge we are dealing with. That is why the province is beefing up its officer visibility to ensure we curb road traffic infringements.”
