Sub-Saharan Africa lags behind most other regions in the world when it comes to access, management and supply of water. An increased demand for water has highlighted the urgent need for water utilities to expand and improve their generation and distribution capacities.
According to a report by Frost and Sullivan, better management of water by utilities can deliver higher gains. In order to do this however, water utilities must reshape and optimise their business and align with rising environmental standards and low carbon economy requirements. New technologyNew technologies are proving successful in improving utilities. Smart water grids can reduce costs and enhance efficiency of water distribution systems, while information and communications technologies are playing an increasing role in smart water service development.
Pricing The report argues the price of water needs to be cost reflective. Revenues should be able to cover operation and maintenance and profit should be invested in expansion and rehabilitation of infrastructure.
