Geosynthetics in pavements | Infrastructure news

Geosynthetics have grown in the civil industry in the past twenty years becoming key materials in the design of new roads and in maintenance programme.

Geosynthetics are now widely used for strengthening of in situ soil, mechanical improvement of pavement layers from the sub- base up to the asphalt wearing course using different type of geosynthetics, from geotextile to geogrids and geocomposite.

Management of stormwater can be achieved using geocomposite for drainage instead of traditional gravel drainage.

The paper will discuss the geosynthetic functions in pavements and their use in a pavement structure, highlighting advantages and disadvantages gained from literature and experience.
