New changes on motor vehicle license renewals | Infrastructure news

Gauteng motorists as from 13 December 2014 will only be able to renew motor vehicle licences at the South African Post Office (SAPO) on presentation of the renewal notice MVL2 that motorists get from the Post office.

According to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport this move is aimed at minimising risk of fraudulent activities that may take place.
This is a departure from the existing process which allows motorists to renew their licenses by filling an ‘ALV’ form available at the SA Post Offices.

Ismail Vadi, MEC for the Gauteng Roads and Transport says, “Our partnership with a reputable organisation like the SAPO, with its wide network covering the outlying areas in the province, will greatly assists us to achieve our objective of service delivery, we believe that bringing this government service to the people is not only about ensuring convenience for the people, but it will also help to promote a culture of law abiding and compliance with the country’s legislative provisions.”

According to Eyewitness News the post office strike is now entering its tenth week and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) is expected to brief employers on the feedback from its members following the latest offer made by the Post Office.

Workers are demanding a 15 percent pay increase while casual staff want permanent positions. The strike has brought postal services to a virtual standstill.
