Reducing road accidents | Infrastructure news

Research shows 90% of all accidents are in part due to human error and 57% entirely attributable to human error. This is according to the Driver Information Bureau (DIB), which aims to play a role at improving safety, wellness and efficiency on the road in the Southern and Eastern African regions.

DIB is a privately owned member based service that works in conjunction with FESARTA (Federation of East and Southern African Transport Associations).

As on online platform, DIB allows transporters access to pertinent driver information, through its Central Driver Database. Through this database companies can check on the driving history of potential employees and drivers have the opportunity updating their information.

Karen Neary, managing director, Drivers Information Bureau (DIB) says, “As we build the critical mass for this product to be efficient for the unemployed driver and the transporter, we work with key products and companies that can assist businesses.”

“The Central Driver Database is a concept that seeks to centralise driver information from as many sources as possible, from employer references and Training records to On-board computer reports.

Prospective employers are able to reference the database of unemployed drivers (with the driver’s permission) and retrieve these records in order to make informed decisions about a driver’s suitability for the work being offered.”

“The system also assists unemployed drivers in reaching an employer market that has been traditionally difficult to access and helps match drivers to work that is suited to their skills.”

“The Database wishes to serve drivers and employers equally, to this end we are establishing an independent committee to ensure this balance.”

Andrew Crickmay a Director of DIB adds, “We have sought the finest legal minds in the design of the service and urge the transport industry, truckers, unions, consignors, drivers, government and allied support services to support Central Driver Database.”
