The completion date for the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Project in Liberia has been extended to 2016 as a result of the deadly Ebola virus.
According to a report by The Inquirer Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf explained that every project in the country had been stalled by the epidemic which has claimed thousands of lives. The Government of Liberia had previously set the completion of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Project for 25 December 2015, but with the departure of major investors and contractors from the country this is no longer possible. The Liberian leader however, assured that a 38MW power plant will be operational to provide electricity to the citizens and that the government is doing everything possible to ensure that the entire country is provided electricity in the shortest possible time. One of Liberia’s major problems is reportedly the provision of electricity. Experts say the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant will serve as a major boost to the pouring in of investors in the country and key to a booming economy.
The Inquirer reports that Liberians have waited for electricity since the ascendency of President Johnson-Sirleaf and although she has continuously promised citizens ‘small light today, big light tomorrow’, they have yet to see it. But the president has however, promised that the hydro project is on course and will definitely be completed in 2016 less than 12 months from now.
