Dunoon urban spaces upgrade progressing well | Infrastructure news

An initiative to create a quality urban public space for the bourgeoning community of Dunoon, in Cape Town, is progressing well.

The City’s contractors are redeveloping a formal sports field and creating an inclusive recreational space.

According to the City, the construction of a clubhouse, which is part of the redesign and is situated in the northern sports precinct of Dunoon, is at an advanced stage. The development of a spray park is also underway.

“It is expected that this phase of the project will be completed before the end of the current financial year,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Councillor Johan van der Merwe.

The City will then look at ways to connect the northern sports facility with the community hall through a more direct route.

A feasibility study for the development of an innovation and learning hub as part of this development is currently underway.

The main components of the upgrade include drainage to the sports fields, a skateable forecourt, a climbing wall and a slide, the construction of a detention pond, spectator seating, hard and soft landscaping, an informal basketball or netball tree, mixed-use hard courts, a mixed-use synthetic surface court, a spray park and a changing room, office facility and clubhouse.

A collaborative effort

This urban space project is a collaborative effort between the City’s Spatial Planning and Urban Design; Sport, Recreation and Amenities; and Parks departments and is linked to the Local Area Planning Initiative which has been designated as a World Design Capital 2014 project because it is changing lives through design.

“The rejuvenation of public community spaces is critical to the upliftment of any area. Recreational spaces encourage our residents to meet and engage with one another, to build communities, and to enjoy active leisure time together.

The public spaces in Dunoon have been designed to reflect the local character of the area and promise to be welcoming and attractive spaces that will encourage people to utilise and enjoy the space,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.
