Construction on the City’s new Community Residential Units (CRUs) in Hangberg has passed the halfway mark.
The first phase of the R34 million construction, of three multi-storey blocks comprising 71 units in total has passed the halfway mark. If all goes according to schedule, the municipality expects construction to be complete by the end of the current financial year. The development, which includes sea-fronting sections, consists of three blocks of flats. The rental units are in close proximity to employment opportunities, key transport routes, social amenities and schools within the existing surrounding area.“This rental development project will provide a safe and clean living space for the families of Hangberg, which will include grassed and play areas in an enhanced landscaped environment,” said Benedicta Van Minnen, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements.
“I would like to thank the community for their support. Without the support of the community, we cannot make progress possible. “These new community residential units show that we are implementing our commitment to redress, empowerment and transformation – brick by brick,” she added. The current phase of the project comprises 142 units. “The impoverished community of Hangberg remains a top priority for the City and we will do everything in our power to increase service delivery and opportunities in this area. We urge the community to continue to work with us so that we can ensure that the project is completed on time,” concluded Van Minnen.
