Those who have recently visited the Sea Point promenade would have noticed that the City of Cape Town has started with a major project to ensure the future of this extremely popular public space.
The City will spend approximately R16.9 million on the rehabilitation of the promenade between Church Street and Marais Road – from the repaving of the promenade walkway and the resurfacing of the parking area near the Sea Point pool, to the construction of a new playground and the resurfacing of parts of the sidewalk along Beach Road which are in a poor condition. It is foreseen that this project, which commenced in September 2014, will be concluded in the latter part of this year. “All of the visitors to the promenade will benefit from the new paving as this will hugely improve the current surface which is many years old and has deteriorated over time.“A section of the walkway in Mouille Point was completed recently and we are receiving positive feedback from those who use it,” commented Councillor Brett Herron, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town.
The first project in this area which entails the rehabilitation of the 85-year-old sea wall between Three Anchor Bay and the Mouille Point lighthouse is now nearing completion. Tenders for the rehabilitation of the section of the sea wall between the Mouille Point lighthouse and the natural beach at Granger Bay, as well as sections of the sea wall on either side of Rocklands Beach in Sea Point, were advertised on 23 January 2015. “The entire promenade will be upgraded over a number of years as funding becomes available, but the work will be done in stages so that we don’t turn the whole of the promenade into a construction site,” Herron concluded.
