Air quality is an important factor in the fight against climate change. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), as the industrial hub of Gauteng has prioritized the improvement of its air quality. This is vitally important due to its high susceptibility to air pollution.
The EMM has called on all stakeholders to participate in the review of the Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP). This review process seeks to provide direction on, identify the main sources of air pollution and the extent of their negative impact on human life. It will address the negative effects of air pollution from industrial sources and effect a best practice for the effective management of air quality.
EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe explains: “The region has numerous sources of air pollution such as domestic coal burning, industries and mining. We aim to channel all our resources to the improvement of air quality.”
The stakeholder engagement process will be in the form of meetings, review reports and the submission of comments during the AQMP review process.
