Water has no substitute: this is the theme for National Water Week 2015 (NWW).

The key message according to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is “What if this was the last drop?”

“Through this year’s campaign, DWS seeks to remind the nation how essential and precious water is by showing them that there is no alternative for water,” says department spokesperson Sputnik Ratau.

If the resource is not appreciated and used responsibly, there could be disastrous consequences.

However, and most importantly, the campaign will highlight the importance of working together as a nation towards conserving water to ensure better access to clean water by all South Africans.

During NWW, Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete will launch various water supply related projects.

The projects will, among others, include the handing over of iMvutshane Dam at the iLembe District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) as well as the handing over of seven houses, a sports field and the community gardens to the community.

Various water conservation projects such as the War on Leaks and Adopt a River will be launched across the country as a way to educate the public on ways to save and protect water resources, says Ratau.

“This year’s NWW comes at a time when some parts of the country are experiencing drought; in particular the province of KZN. Some of the department’s activities will focus on alleviating the water scarcity in that province,” he concludes.
