Good planning at Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) has resulted in the utility becoming the implementing agent for a number of new plans and projects in Limpopo.
Phineas Legodi, acting chief executive at LNW, talks about his team’s efforts towards attaining accelerated bulk water services delivery in the province. South Africa’s thirteen water boards have undergone and institutional realignment in order to reduce the number of national water boards to nine. The implication is that some water boards have been disestablished and the footprint of others, like LNW, was expanded to streamline service delivery. “For LNW, this means we will be taking over bulk water service provision for Vhembe District Municipality and some other parts of the Waterberg, as well as the Mopani and Capricorn district municipalities.“This means we will have greater responsibility to ensure sufficient water for a number of economically important industrial areas, particularly at the level of infrastructure operations and maintenance,” explains Legodi.
“Regarding the current status of the realignment, we are doing due diligence assessments of the infrastructure within the new areas under our jurisdiction. “This allows us to determine the lifespan of those assets, the cost of revitalisation (if needed), and what human capital will be required,” he adds.
