Students close off part of N2 | Infrastructure news

Students at the Walter Sisulu University have closed off part of the N2 road between East London and Mthatha as protests continued on Thursday.

Speaking to News24 from the Butterworth campus, a student who asked not to be named confirmed the group of protesters had shut down part of the N2.

“We removed staff members as well. We experienced some provocation from road users, but it has all been peaceful for the moment.”

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manata confirmed that burning blocks had been laid on the roadway.

“At the moment there are no cases of violence. Students are now inside the campus and we are working on removing the blockage now.”

The protest comes after a peaceful demonstration in Cape Town turned violent as police fired stun grenades and teargas at students when they forced their way into the Parliamentary precinct.-News24
