The phase 1 of the Spring Grove Dam in KwaZulu-Natal Province is complete and work is set for phase 2.

After completion of the full project the Dam will supply water from the Kamberg catchment area of the Drakensberg to six KwaZulu-Natal local and district municipalities, including Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Funds allocated for this project amount to R1 billion and 960 jobs to be created.

This is much needed water resource development project bringing additional water to the ever expanding KwaZulu-Natal coastal metropolitan area.

The project was approved following extensive studies by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) into the future water requirements of the region.

Spring Grove is the fifth dam to be built in the Mooi-Mgeni system, which already comprises Midmar, Albert Falls, Nagle and Inanda dam.

Together, these dams provide water to more than five million people and industries in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and surrounding towns.

The new dam will augment the yield of the system by 60 million m3 /year, taking the total system yield to 394 million m3 /year.
