Surveillance technology on ATNS’ radar | Infrastructure news

Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) will be using Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) surveillance, Primary and Secondary Surveillance Radars, and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) at a number of its sites in the interests of improved safety and efficiency.

The WAM system will provide surveillance over the entire Northern region. Radars will be deployed at O.R. Tambo International Airport, Cape Town, Durban and Blesberg and will be integrated into ATNS’s existing Air Traffic Management System. DME systems will be deployed at 31 sites across South Africa.

Together, these technologies should improve ATNS’ capability to offer airlines RNAV routes for faster and shorter trajectories, lower fuel consumption, and reduced carbon emissions.
