MagMeal could save our oceans | Infrastructure news

The world’s growing population results in an ever-increasing demand for food. However, there is not enough feed to feed the animals which humans consume. In this regard, a new process has the potential to save money and fish populations.

In 2012, 148 million tonnes of fish captured from fisheries and aquaculture were supplied to the world. 15 million tonnes of this was reduced to fishmeal and fish oil. Fishmeal production generates carbon emissions of an estimated 10 875 kg of CO2 per tonne.

AgriProtein has found a cheaper and more sustainable way to feed the animals that become food for humans by replacing fishmeal with insect meal. To do this AgriProtein cultivates maggots and uses them to feed chickens.

The process uses 110 tonnes of waste that would otherwise go to landfill, and produces 20 tonnes of maggots, which can be used to feed monogastric animals, 40 tonnes of soil conditioner and 50 tonnes of water that has evaporated into the air.

Not only does this process save money and fish populations, but ‘MagMeal’ is by far the more environmentally friendly option, producing only 2 056 kg of CO2 per tonne.
