Grahamstown residents will soon be able to recycle with ease as the Masahlule Recycling initiative kicks off on Monday 6 November 2017.
The initiative, which is backed by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA), GBF and the Grahamstown Residents Association (GRA), will see less waste going to landfill sites and more income for recycling entrepreneurs. Grahamstown residents have been requested to put all their clean, dry recyclables into clear or orange bags and then put them out on the curb early in the morning on the day of their normal waste collection. Masahlule explained that its dedicated vehicle will do the rounds ahead of the Municipal truck, initially just in Grahamstown West. They have a working arrangement with the informal waste pickers, which they hope will increase the amount of recycling.
“Animals like dogs and donkeys will not tear open recycling bags if everything inside is clean and dry. This means far less rubbish blowing around,” the company said in a statement. “There probably will be a few teething problems, but at least it’s a step in the right direction,” it concluded.
