The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality recently unveiled three unmarked cars and a specialised vehicle it says will strengthen its fight against illegal dumping in the city.

The specialised vehicle is equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance equipment that is so advanced the vehicle can spot illegal dumping activities more than a kilometre away during day and night.

“Nelson Mandela Bay is battling with unwarranted illegal dumping by residents and businesses who are plunging the City into a state of filth,” explains Sibongile Dimbaza, the City’s mayoral spokesperson.

Dimbaza notes that the launch should send a strong message to those who partake in the unlawful act as the City’s town rangers, Metro Police and members of the SAPS will work in tandem in patrolling targeted communities where this bad habit mostly takes place.

“This is our declaration against illegal dumping and the City will be putting up boards in hotspots to warn offenders about the consequences of illegal dumping,” he adds.

“The City issues a spot fine of R2000 to offenders who are caught on the act. For repeat offenders, we will impound your vehicle as we have had enough of wanton dumping in our communities,”Dimbaza concludes.
