There are few things Bill Gates likes to talk about more than sanitation which is why it comes as no surprise that he has set out on a quest to reinvent the toilet in a bid to help the poorest of the poor.Â
In one of his latest gatesnotes videos Gates says that toilets are something that are largely taken for granted in wealthier countries. “It’s magical that there’s a sewer system bringing water in, taking away the waste and it all gets cleaned up in a processing plant. However, for the poorest two and a half billion in the world, they don’t have this. It’s unaffordable. We can’t build that for everyone in the world.”Gates’ mission to reinvent the toilet began in 2011 when the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene program initiated the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge to generate and support new approaches for toilet technologies that safely and effective manage human waste.
Since then the foundation has been hard at work on the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge with toilet testing currently underway in Durban. Source: Bill Gates
