Pretoria landfill site closure has ‘upset’ residents | Infrastructure news

The Onderstepoort landfill site in the north of Pretoria, situated on the R566 road in Bon Accord, will finally close its doors to the public in December.

However, according to Rekord North this has upset residents, with them complaining about the “sudden” closure of the landfill.

Local ward councillor Hannes Coetzee confirmed to the publication that the site would be closed, saying that: “Actually, it was announced two years ago that the landfill was going to close.”

An environmental impact study of the landfill site found that the site had reached its full capacity.

Coetzee said although no garden refuse was accepted at the landfill site at this time, household refuse was still accepted.

“We are looking at alternatives that may include recycling.”

Coetzee said other landfill sites in the area could also be used like the ones in Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve.
