Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Lindiwe Sisulu has appointed advocate Terry Motau to lead a team of lawyers to review all fraud, corruption and irregular expenditure reports at the department and to ensure all recommendations are fully implemented.
Part of Motau’s job is to ensure the implementation of all recommendations made. The investigations will include Water Boards and senior managers of the Water and Sanitation Department. According to Sisulu, projects worth more than R16-billion have been issued irregularly. Sisulu said there had been a lack of consequence management in the department and as a result many officials who were implicated in fraud and corruption were either still at work or suspended with pay.“I have directed advocate Motau and a team that he is going to be working that I want all reports on fraud, corruption and irregular expenditure of the department and all water boards to be reviewed and that all recommendations be implemented. Officials and service providers involved in corruption must face the consequences,” Sisulu said in a statement on Tuesday.
Motau has been involved in a number of high-profile investigations, a recent one being the “Great Bank Heist”, which focused on corruption and looting at VBS Bank in Limpopo.
