During 2015, the UN adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 we achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. However, according to Euromonitor International, a London-based market research company, there are five key trends one must be wary of, which affect global sustainability.

2. Building inclusive smart communities in developing countries

Researchers from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), as well as various South African universities, will unveil a book titled: Approaches to building a smart community: An exploration through the concept of the digital village on Saturday, 17 September 2022 at the CSIR International Convention Centre (ICC) in Pretoria.

3. Africa has untapped export potential of $31 billion

United National Conference on Trade and Development says Africa’s untapped export of $31 billion can be achieved if Africa implements partial tariff liberalisation under the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) Agreement over the next five years. Currently, trade between African countries comprises 61% of processed and semi-processed goods.

4. The DWS has received inputs on how to better sustain water resources

Key water sector stakeholders led by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) gathered to make inputs into the National Water Resource Strategy 3 (NWRS-3).

The primary key focus of the NWRS-3 is to ensure equitable and sustainable access to and use of water by all South Africans while sustaining the water resource. The Cabinet approved the National Water Resource Strategy 3 for gazetting and public consultation, and Eastern Cape is the first Province to hold this public consultative workshop.
