The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), responsible for infrastructure in the city, has launched a search for a new contractor to finalize the Watt Street Public Environment (PEU) project. The decision comes after the termination of the previous contractor due to inadequate performance.
Situated in the Wynberg area, the Watt Street Precinct holds significance as it transitions from an industrial zone to a diverse mixed-use area. Its strategic location between Alexandra and Sandton sees a daily foot traffic of approximately 10,000 individuals. The Watt PEU project aims to transform the street infrastructure to better accommodate various users, with a focus on enhancing pedestrian experiences and improving public spaces. Key objectives of the project include enhancing mobility, upgrading infrastructure, improving area visibility, addressing public safety concerns, and creating adaptable public spaces.Originally scheduled for completion by the end of March, the project has encountered delays due to the underperformance of the previous contractor, leading to the termination of their contract.
As the JDA begins the process of procuring a new contractor, they acknowledge the setback in project completion and commit to communicating a revised timeline for its conclusion. Siyabonga Genu, JDA’s project implementation executive manager, stated on March 26, “We recognize the community’s frustrations regarding the delay of the Watt Street PEU. We are committed to ensuring the successful completion of the project, considering its impact on the community and the wider cityscape.” Over the past six years, the JDA has made substantial investments in the Watt Street Precinct as part of its Transit-Oriented Development Programme. These investments include upgrades to public spaces, pedestrian walkways, the construction of the Great Walk bridge over the M1 highway, the establishment of new intersections facilitating access to the precinct, and the implementation of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C bus rapid transit system.
