Amathole District Municipality will host its 2nd climate change and renewable energy symposium at Lutheran Hall in Stutterheim under Amahlathi Local Municipality on the 19-20th February 2014.
The purpose of the Climate Change and Renewable Energy Symposium is to create an environment whereby the community, youth, businesses and government can share knowledge and ideas about Renewable Energy opportunities within the Amathole District Municipality with specific reference to the Amahlathi Local Municipality. Furthermore, this event will focus on participatory educational awareness and showcasing of small-to-large scale Green Energy (GE) opportunities that business, investors and communities can implement. Inter-linkages between Climate change and Renewable Energy is on the basis that renewable energy is viewed as an opportunity that provide applicable solutions to the challenges posed by global warming. According to the ADM Renewable Energy study and Air Quality Management Plan as well as a socio economic data collected from previous IDPs, Amahlathi is one of the local municipalities with great potential for renewable energy and green economy in general.About eighty (80) grade 11 and 12 learners will partake in the symposium from four (4) high schools in Amahlathi namely; Kubusie Combined School, JongileNompondo High School, St Mathews High School and Siyakhula High School respectively.
This prestigious event is expected to attract the ADM diverse stakeholders ranging from members of the community, business and private sector, entrepreneurs, government departments, NGO’s to institutions of higher learning. To maximise empowerment of the youth, the participating schools will be given a theme and topics from which they will be requested to formulate a project or a presentation depicting their understanding of climate change and renewable energy. The projects will be judged and awards will be given to the best projects. The two day event will be preceded by site visits to renewable energy projects and presentations by stakeholders. Stakeholders will also showcase renewable energy programmes/projects in the Exhibition marquee on day two (2) of the event.
