The Gauteng Provincial government will phase out asbestos roofing and replace it with tile roofing.
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane announced this during a recent visit to Shoshanguve. “We are starting with Tshwane, but eventually every household with an asbestos roof will be a thing of the past. We need to start protecting our people against any hazardous material because the effects on the health of our people are dire,” Mokonyane said. She said that the large number of asbestos-related deaths in the past means government can no longer turn a blind eye.Mokonyane was visiting Shoshanguve as part of the intervention plan for the houses that were damaged by a severe hailstorm last year. A total of nine contractors have been appointed to repair the houses that were damaged. The repair work in Soshanguve is now underway and priority will be given to vulnerable households.
