New landfill for Ghana | Infrastructure news

The Nsumia Waste Disposal facility has begun operations in Accra, Ghana, as part of efforts to manage the country’s waste disposal.

The new landfill was commissioned following the closure of landfill sites which left the Kpong landfill as the only operating site in the Greater Accra Region. This put excessive pressure on the site.

According to Modern Ghana, the new site has been engineered to contain refuse for the next two years and will replace the closed Pantang landfill site. The facility is will serve as an alternative solid waste landfill site for residents, particularly those in western Accra.

The facility has the capacity to handle up to 1 000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily. General Manager of Waste Landfills Company Limited, Peter Kwei Dagadu, told Modern Ghana that this will substantially relieve the pressure on waste contractors that are forced to travel to the Kpone landfill.

The Nsumia Waste Disposal facility is located in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality, off the Accra Nsawam motorway.
