JBay suffers festive infrastructure collapse | Infrastructure news

Those who visited Jeffrey’s Bay this past festive season were met with a town in a state of disrepair as issues with water supply, power and sewage made headlines.

According to JBay News the town suffered a power failure which lasted three days, after a power line went down.

The outage saw retailers unable to trade at the busiest time of the year for Jeffery’s Bay.

Retailers and restaurants apparently reported dismal trading over the three day period, and petrol stations ran out of diesel as those with generators tried to keep their doors open for trading, the site reported.

According to the site the beaches were also badly affected with sewage pouring out onto Kabeljous and Checkers beaches due to pump stations not functioning.

The problem spread to Aston Bay where sewage was spewing from the Cormorant Street pump station.

There were also concerns that the upper parts of Wavecrest that are supplied by boreholes would run out of water as no pumping was happening while the power was down.

At the time the Kouga Municipality told JBay News that there were problems with municipal and Eskom lines at Jeffrey’s Bay and Humansdorp.

Many holiday goers cut their vacation short, while others went to Port Elizabeth in search of refuge. Holiday goers also took to social media to voice their dissatisfaction with their festive experience in Jeffrey’s Bay.
