Eskom has committed to securing the power supply to plants along the Olifantspoort to ensure that there are no disruptions to the water supply to the respective areas.
This comes after a sit down with the Polokwane Municipality and Lepellle Northern Water in a move to solve the water shortages that have been affecting the city cluster, Seshego and Moletji. Working together to resolve this crisis, the three entities explored various long term and short term solutions. Recently the municipality experienced a series of water shortages that lasted almost a week in some areas of the city cluster and Seshego. Intermittent power interruptions at the water supply plant amid high demand for water had a compounding effect on recovery work and this consequently had a negative effect on the high areas like Flora Park, Serala View, Ster Park, Bendor, some parts of Seshego and the areas in Moletši without water for a few days. The municipality says that although it has currently restored water to the areas that have been affected, the reservoir levels are in a recovery state, and the water level is still critical.
“In order for reservoirs to have meaningful water capacity, the community is urged to limit water consumption to immediate household needs and avoid irrigation of gardens, filling swimming pools and washing cars,” says Tidimalo Chuene, municipality spokesperson. Polokwane Municipality together with Eskom and LNW has established a committee to meet regularly to deal with this matter and other related matters. Chuene says the municipality is at an advanced stage of implementing projects that will provide new infrastructure, rehabilitation and upgrading of existing infrastructure, as well as improve water management infrastructure.
