The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa is set to unveil an augmented landfill site worth R12million Naledi Local Municipality in the North West on Friday, 10 April.
The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has funded construction of a landfill site and the associated infrastructure in Huhudi Village, Vryburg. The funding of this project was channelled through the Department’s Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programme (EPIP). The project,has so far created work opportunities for at least 182 local people. The DEA will also provide beneficiaries with accredited training which will equip them with necessary skills to acquire better job opportunities on exit from the projects.The DEA is providing support to the creation of waste management infrastructure such as a new cell, paving of the landfill site, provision of a weighbridge and waste sorting area were separation of recyclable material will be sorted.
These initiatives will not only address the challenge of poor waste management, but also maximise socio-economic benefits through job creation, awareness and education through skills development. A national cement manufacturer has partnered with the National Department of Environmental Affairs, Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers and a private company in implementing the Northwest-Augmentation of the Naledi Local Municipality Landfill Site. This is to further aid job creation and empowerment in the area.
