The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) will spend almost R100-million in Region B in the 2015-2016 financial year to improve and maintain the roads infrastructure, including the repairing of potholes.
The region includes relatively developed suburbs such as Windsor, Albertville, Blairgowrie, Bryanston, Bosmont, Coronationville, Cresta, Emmarentia, Greenside, Fairlands, Hurlingham, Florida Glen, Langlaagte, Northcliff, Richmond, and Sandhurst. The R99 million budget includes an approximate R69 million capital expenditure and R30 million investiture in infrastructure maintenance. “The work that we do in Region B is mainly road infrastructure maintenance, rather than road construction as such. We proactively attend to potentially problematic road surfaces before they become difficult and expensive to fix,” says JRA’s Acting Managing Director, Mpho Kau. “On a daily basis, we carry out road infrastructure maintenance, including the maintenance of pavements and footways and of the storm water systems,” says Kau. Of this financial year’s capital expenditure, R37 million – the lion’s share – will go towards the road resurfacing programme in all the region’s suburbs.The agency has also set aside R10 million to repair storm water systems in three areas in the region – Berario (R2.6 million), Fairlands (R3.4 million) and Kelands at the Willows Bird Sanctuary (R4 million).
A further R8 million will be spent on bridge infrastructure – R6 million to repair a collapsed gabion wall at Carlow Road in Melville and R 2 million to repair a collapsed culvert at the Auckland Park Country Club. Kau says another R7 million has been earmarked for the repair of a sinkhole in Bryanston.Other expenditure is as follows:
- R7-million for the reconstruction of roads in all the region’s suburbs;
- R4 million for the repair and rehabilitation of embankments and sidewalks along William Nicol Road in Bryanston; and
- R3 million for the rehabilitation and prevention of soil erosion at the Bryanston River Embankment.
