Things are heating up between the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) and Pikitup management as the trade union calls for criminal charges to be reinstated against the company’s managing director.

The union also seeks to address, in court, the matter of Pikitup issuing an interdict against its workers.

Earlier this week several shop stewards were charged with mismanagement by Pikitup which resulted in alleged strike action. However Samwu denies their workers ever downed tools.

According to a report by EWN resolutions have now been made resulting in both sides taking action.

Pikitup MD Amanda Nair told EWN a judge will be ruling on the interdict on Thursday.

“We are hoping they will grant us the relief we seek by way of interdicting any industrial action relating to this matter. In the meanwhile, we are being very mindful of any disruptions so we made sure we have quite a strong contingency in place.”

Samwu’s Paul Tlhabang says its members can’t be victims forever.

“We have instructed our lawyers to press criminal charges against Amanda [Nair], because she is provoking the situation; she is untouchable, we are aware that individuals are hell-bent on protecting Amanda.”
