With parts of the province of KwaZulu-Natal currently experiencing the crippling effects of severe drought, it is fitting that the city of Durban plays host to the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA’s) 2016 Conference and Exhibition, this May.

The five-day-long conference runs from 15-19 May 2016 at the Durban International Convention Centre.

It will feature more than 100 expert speakers dissecting issues crucial to the effective management of our water resources.

For the 2016 edition, the prestigious biennial event adopts a pertinent theme, one in line with the challenges currently facing the country: “Water – The Ultimate Constraint”.

WISA CEO, Dr Lester Goldman, said as planning for a WISA conference is known to begin two years in advance, the theme of this year’s event carries added import.

“It is significant given the current situation in which we find ourselves. The chosen topic carries more relevance this year, than we originally anticipated. It is our hope that through open dialogue and debate, this conference will aid in addressing the water shortage issues we face as a nation.”

Largest water conference of its kind

Established in the 1950’s, the WISA conference has grown to become the largest of its kind in Southern Africa, detailing issues inherently faced by the area’s population.

The event attracts around 2 000 delegates, from the water sector of Southern Africa, as well as international delegates from countries such as the Netherlands, Danish, Germany, China and Australia, including engineers, municipalities, water industry stakeholders and the like.

This year, organisers expect this number to grow exponentially, as the need for water solutions grows.

16 sub themes

The keynote address will be delivered by Neil McCleod, ‎Head: Water and Sanitation at eThekwini Water and Sanitation. The main subject matter will be ably supported by 16 sub-themes which include community water supply and sanitation, potable water, industrial water and effluent among others.
