Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown has given Eskom 90 days to investigate the power utility’s acting CEO Matshela Koko.

This comes after the Sunday Times learned that Eskom awarded tenders worth 1 billion rand (US$80.5 million) to Impulse International, a company where Koko’s stepdaughter was a director. The tenders reportedly came in the form of four contracts.

According to the newspaper, Brown wants Eskom to investigate Koko’s role in awarding the contracts.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) commented on this saying it intended to request that the public protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, investigate whether Koko violated state procurement guidelines by awarding the tenders.

“Koko’s reported actions could show that he is compromised and unfit to be the head of Eskom,” the DA said in a statement.

The newspaper also said that Koko’s stepdaughter, Koketso Choma, denied she had done anything wrong.

According to eNCA, Koko says he did not know she was a director at Impulse International, despite living in the same house. Koko says he told Choma to resign when he learnt of her involvement in the company last August.

Choma has reportedly resigned from the company.

Koko was appointed by Brown as acting CEO of Eskom last December after the resignation of Brain Molefe.

Molefe was implicated in former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture report which questioned his ties to mining deals involving the Gupta family.

Brown told the Sunday Times: “If there is any proof of wrongdoing, Koko will face a disciplinary process.”
