The P46/1 road in Meyerton, south of Johannesburg, will undergo a R50 million rehabilitation according to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport.
The department said it is undertaking the rehabilitation project because the P46/1 road, which connects Meyerton, Alberton and Katlehong, is old and has reached the end of its serviceable life and needs to be fully upgraded.Stimulating labour and strengthening relations
An important component of the project according to the department is local sub-contracting and labour employment. The department says it focus on employing women, youth and people with disabilities.“This road that is under construction has two rivers that cross it and can help to stimulate industrial development in an area that is largely rural and agricultural in nature,” explains MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi.
“I hope that the upgrading of this road will strengthen the links between industries in Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni, create jobs and promote local economic growth of this region,” Vadi adds. Vadi notes that the contractor undertaking the project was appointed through the open tender system and that the construction is a six months long project, scheduled for completion in August.
