Videx Storage Tanks is a division of the Videx Group, and was established in 2010. The Videx Group itself has been in existence since 1984.

Its manufacturing plant is based in Wadeville, Germiston and currently employs over 350 people and processes around 3000 tonnes of steel per month.

Videx Storage Tanks was set up initially to cater for the needs of the mines which required solutions for bulk storage of liquids used in various applications such as drinking water, raw water, fire water and diesel. It was later realised that a bigger opportunity existed to cater for other industry sectors by providing them with liquid storage products as well. The company has since expanded, growing its customer base and recognition in the industry as a water storage solution provider.

What industries is the Videx range of storage tanks used in?

The Videx tanks can be used in a variety of applications and industries. The applications vary from the storage of drinking water, raw water, fire water and effluent water to diesel and other chemicals. The industries which use Videx storage tanks range from government departments, municipalities, commercial buildings, mines, farms, rural areas, harbours and residential developments.

Tell us about the company’s business operations in the rest of Africa.

Part of Videx’s strategy is to expand and supply the African continent with its storage tanks. With the growing need for stable water supply in Africa, several African countries have been identified as potential markets for the company. These markets are challenging to operate in, but it is rewarding to see the effects of completed projects, for example, how entire communities are uplifted by getting reliable water sources to use. We have already supplied and installed tanks in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In the water industry specifically, can you discuss some of the specific projects where Videx storage tanks have been used?

Videx has been involved with several projects which include the installation of water tanks at the Kumba Iron Ore – Thabazimbi Mine, two water tanks at the Assmang Chrome –Dwarsrivier Mine, a GRP water tank at Vodaworld, elevated water tanks at the Mafefe Village in Limpopo and at a new Diepsloot Secondary School, and a water tank of 800 000ℓ capacity, at a distribution warehouse in Cape Town.

Can you provide information on some of the more unique projects that have been undertaken, such as largest capacity tanks, etc?

I think every tank and project is unique, because behind each project are different requirements, people, challenges, and rules and regulations. The challenge is to conform to the customer’s requirements at all times, and to always try to exceed the customer’s expectations.

One unique project that we are currently working on is the construction and erection of a water tank on top of a 35 m high steel tower at the Sasol Impumelelo Mine in the Mpumalanga province. Another unique tank has been installed at the official State House in Lesotho. In both instances strict codes of Health and Safety need to be adhered to and deadlines are critical.

Some of the innovative products that Videx is introducing to the market are the Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) tanks, which are very popular worldwide due to corrosion resistant or “rust-free” properties. The panels are light weight, which makes the installation faster. Also movement towards “greener” products make this an ideal alternative.

Where possible Videx uses local labour during the tank installation stage to help uplift the communities in which it operates in.
