The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) is calling on all waste management industry bodies to submit their abstracts for an opportunity to showcase their innovative products and services at WasteCon 2018.
In support of the National Waste Management Strategy’s objective of reducing waste to landfill, the abstracts submitted must be in line with the theme “Implementing the Waste Hierarchy”. The hierarchy ranks options of waste management in order of preference according to the type of waste. “The aim of the waste management hierarchy is to extract the maximum practical benefits from products while generating the minimum amount of waste,” says Jan Palm, President of the IWMSA. “The proper application of the waste hierarchy has several benefits: preventing the emission of greenhouse gases, reducing pollutants, saving energy, conserving resources, creating jobs, and stimulating the development of green technology,” he explains.WasteCon 2018
“WasteCon2018 provides a platform for key role players in the industry to discuss best practice and innovations for implementing the waste management hierarchy,” adds Palm. The conference will take place over a period of three days, plenary sessions, presentations and parallel workshops will be conducted by the leaders in the respective fields providing an overview as well as an in-depth description of the developments, research, innovations and technologies.“The highlight of the conference will be a technical tour set to take place on the last day of the conference. The details of this exciting tour will be revealed at a later stage so watch this space and make sure that you book your seat in advance as space is limited,” concludes Palm.
WasteCon2018 will take place from 15 to 19 October 2018 at Emperor’s Palace, Johannesburg, Gauteng.
